I am the spirit of Mary the Maiden
yearning for the Savior,
and daily, she leads me to nurture this yearning
and fan it to new flame
at the hearth of the Eucharist. I am the song of Mary.
I am voice for her hymn of praise;
and I melody my praise each day
at the festival of Heaven and earth:
the Liturgy of the Hours.
I am the hearth, the new place where
Mary comes each day
to ponder and treasure the Sacred Word,
and daily she asks her Spouse the Holy Spirit,
to overshadow me and bring this Word to life in me.
I am our Lady’s.
She it is who has beckoned me and she herself
has kindled gently in me
this blessed hunger and holy thirst for holiness.
She it is who has come and made my heart all new
with desire for her Son,
and all young with hope that I, too, can be holy.
I am our Lady’s.
She it is who has whispered in my heart
and called me
to the hearth, the festival, and the new place of pondering.

She sends me from my Upper Room
to be her presence of love in my home,
my neighborhood, and my place of work. She sends me to bring the smile of Jesus,
the patience of Jesus,
the miracle of Jesus, the forgiving One,
to the needy one.
She sends me from my Upper Room
to fill my own world with the Good News of Jesus,
the One who has conquered the stronghold of death itself.

Mary has commissioned me
to bring the world to the Eucharist
and the Eucharist to the world.
She gives me no pulpit.
She anoints me not with Orders.
She sends no shaking winds or flames of fiery tongues.
She whispers, and gently,
like the whispering breeze that transformed Elijah,
she, the Queen of the Universe,
the Mother of the Church,
commissions me at every Eucharist
to bring the Bread of Life to the hungry world
by the simplicity of living the Eucharist
in her spirit of praise, sacrifice, and love
in the very heart of the world. |
